A playground for homeless children

Shelter Family Playground Sacramento CaliforniaTomorrow is the last day to vote in our Promote Your Project Video Contest! Throughout the entire voting process, four of our 10 finalists have been neck and neck as they vy for first place. The remaining six finalists need your help to increase their vote count! It's hard to choose just one project to vote for, but today we wanted to give project leaders from Family Shelter Playground a chance to share their story:

Volunteers of America opened its Residential Family Center in Sacramento, Calif., in October 2009 in response to the growing needs for emergency shelter in our community. Often times, a family doesn’t want to be separated and without available shelter beds, they are forced to live in cars, illegally camp or double up in someone else’s home. The shelter provides for as many as 12 families per night with a total of 62 beds.

More than 400 children will call this shelter "home" each year. Currently, there’s no play structure available. We want to build a playground that provides a fun, safe environment for children to play but also to help with stress management; social, emotional and cognitive development skills; and overall health and fitness. Homelessness can be very traumatic and stressful for children.

Help Family Shelter Playground get $5,000 toward playground equipment! Watch their video entry and cast your vote.
