Today, the National Recreation and Park Association launched a campaign to defeat an amendment to the economic stimulus package that would ban the use of those funds for local parks. The amendment, proposed by Senator Coburn states: "no funds in the bill can be used for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, swimming pool, stadium, community park, museum, theater, art center, and highway beautification project."

At KaBOOM!, we feel passionately that local parks are critical to the heath and wellbeing of communities, and that the public's reliance on local parks will only increase in this economic climate.

Senator Bingaman offered Amendment number 480,which would provide $100 million in funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund Stateside Assistance Program (LWCF). While these funds could not be used for land acquisition, they could be used for repair and rehabilitation of parks, trails and recreation infrastructure. Senator Bingaman still needs support for this amendment. Please call your Senators now and ask them to vote “YES” to Senate Amendment 480 support the Bingaman Amendment.

Find and call your senators today and ask them to oppose the Coburn Amendment that prohibits funding for community parks!
