"Play is invaluable in returning a sense of safety, normalcy, and health." Courtney, KaBOOM! Project Manager
Mesa has been a Playful City USA for two years running, and it takes that status seriously. Mesa mom Marily Smith stepped up to the plate to participate in our Park-A-Day Summer Challenge, visiting a new local park or playground every day with her children this past summer. Residents across the city convened on Sept. 8 at Beverly Park to celebrate Marily's 50th park visit!
Mayor Scott Smith even took time out of his undoubtedly busy schedule to attend the celebration and personally present Marily with a certificate of participation:
Says Dyan Dwyer Seaburg from the Mesa Parks and Recreation Department, "We were proud to have Marily represent Mesa in the KaBOOM! Summer Challenge and are happy to show once again that we are a Playful City USA!"
As cities seek more ways to be playful, we hope they will follow Mesa's lead by not only enacting change at a policy level, but also finding and honoring residents who are advocating for the cause of play. Go Marily! Go Mesa!
