City of Geneva
Rain or Shine Interactive Sidewalk Play
Rain or Shine Interactive Sidewalk Play turns a sidewalk along a passive park into a permanent sidewalk with weather-changing art in downtown Geneva, New York.
About the project
Rain or Shine Interactive Sidewalk Play features a sunny design and a hidden design that emerges when wet. With the help of the Boys & Girls Club teens, the designs include games, art and inspiring messages. Signage on light poles signal to the community that a playful opportunity is right under their feet. The artwork includes a unicorn that grows wings when it rains, a round hopscotch board that turns into eggs in a nest with a chicken and emojis that get huge when wet. The designs can be reimagined any time a community member visits a spot with temporary chalk. The artwork is designed to be eye-catching and inviting, so that youth, their families and caregivers will stop in their tracks and take some time to play.
Bicentennial Park was not well utilized or cared for before the addition of Rain or Shine Interactive Sidewalk Play. Now, the neighborhood takes advantage of the space, where a weekly free youth yoga class takes place. The community youth who contributed designs to the project are proud of their accomplishments and the families participating in the project are excited to have play as a focus in their neighborhood.
