Rain or Shine Interactive Sidewalk Play
For the Rain or Shine Interactive Sidewalk Play, the City of Geneva is collaborating with youth artists to design and install weather-changing permanent sidewalk artwork at Bicentennial Park in Downtown.
Local artists from UG Collective will assist the youth artists through the design process and implementation. The site will have a sunny design and a hidden design that will emerge when wet. Designs would incorporate games, artistic designs and inspiring messages. Signage on light poles would catch the community's eye signaling to everyone that a playful opportunity is right under their feet. An annual event would celebrate sidewalk play and instigate new designs spreading into all neighborhoods over time.
Boys & Girls Club teens, already collaborating on this project, selected the three final sites based on locations youth and families already use. The teen designers chose locations that youth are walking through to get to another destination, but not playing or learning there. The artwork is designed to be eye-catching and inviting, so that youth, their families and caregivers will stop in their tracks and take some time to play.
The designs can be re-imagined anytime a community members visits a spot with temporary chalk and builds upon the pre-placed artwork, creating an interactive opportunity for them to build upon the creations already in place! The artwork also stimulates interaction with the artwork and with friends, new or old, playing with you.
A few examples of initial designs from the youth temporarily created during the application process included a unicorn that grows wings when it rains, round hopscotch board that turns into eggs in a nest with a chicken, and emojis to step on and mimic and that get huge when wet.
