Living Streets Alliance
We will transform Pueblo Gardens neighborhood into "Playful Gardens" by creating an interactive, fun corridor along Menor Stravenue which connects families to Pueblo Gardens Elementary school, the Boys and Girls Club, and Pueblo Gardens park. The project will utilize low-cost solutions to address traffic safety concerns, while transforming Menor into a colorful, vibrant corridor that invites movement and interaction.
Improvements will dignify an otherwise barren and neglected corridor that many families traverse daily. Project components will include:
A "Playful Gardens" foot path: The sidewalk will be painted with games in the style of ?Choose your own adventure, including sinewy lines to follow, visual cues to hop, skip, twirl, and so on. Obstacles and play stations will be installed along the way made from re-purposed materials (ex. wooden pallets, tires, milk crates, etc.).
Splashes of color and neighborhood art: Students will conduct ethnographic interviews with long-time neighborhood residents to incorporate relevant imagery and symbols into the murals they help paint, that will cover a wall spanning an entire block and the intersections at either end.
Greening and beautification: Planting trees will provide shade and also help prevent run-off onto the sidewalk, which is covered by sand and dirt. Youth-decorated clay planters will host xeriscape, native vegetation and serve to create curb extensions at the intersection to calm traffic.
Playful crosswalks: School crosswalks will be painted to include hopscotch or dance steps in order to increase visibility and encourage students to use it to get to the school entrance.
