Chicago Children's Theatre: Dreams on Parade
Chicago Children's Theatre's (CCT's) Dreams on Parade will be an interactive diorama experience inspiring imagination and play throughout Chicagio's West Loop neighborhood and surrounding at-risk communities. We will display multiple mailbox-like structures- Dream Boxes- that showcase student created miniature worlds, or "peak shows."" These worlds will contain visual riddles that connect each box, sending passersby on a treasure hunt. Solar panels will light up the interior of the boxes to allow the treasure hunt to take place all hours.
The hunt will begin at CCT's new West Loop home where we are renovating a former police station into a public community arts center. Windows on the north and east sides of the building will come to life with animation, projecting a riddle/clue that reveals the location of a Dream Box. From this point, youth will be led on a search for up to 10 of these structures providing a two-mile course of mental and physical play opportunity. The course cuts directly across an "alley" of low-income neighborhoods, connecting broad and diverse populations. Community partners are being engaged representing local businesses, government offices, social service agencies, schools and parks. These stakeholders will leverage support to house the Dream Boxes in public spaces surrounding their locations. By convening this cross-section of community leaders we will create opportunities for dialogue amongst these stakeholders and children, demonstrating the community's unified commitment to ensuring meaningful, accessible, safe and free opportunities for youth to play and develop.
