About the project

More than 26.4 percent of the population in McAllen, Texas, lives in poverty. Nearly 40 percent suffer from obesity and other health-related issues. With this in mind, the Metro McAllen Swing-and-Ride Project turned an underutilized area into a multi-dimensional and colorful non-traditional bus stop to keep kids and riders active. Many playful elements can be found at the stop, including a custom-made swing set, oversized musical instruments, a new bus shelter and a 13.5 cubic yard-serpentine sidewalk and maze pad area.

Community impact

The Metro McAllen Swing-and-Ride bus stop has helped improve the image of “public transportation” throughout the community, and helps riders of all ages enjoy their time while waiting for the bus. The new stop also boasts more lighting, which has drastically improved visibility in the area for early-morning and evening riders.
