About the project
What was once a chore is now an adventure just a short distance from home. Kids are encouraged to hop, skip and search for nature finds on the way to the laundry facility. Once there, play begins outside with sidewalk games. Inside, community members can find a brightly decorated space with challenges and encouragement to stay active on the walls and windows. Comfortable seating and game tables are the stage for a number of family games. Parents of young kids have access to area rugs, giving toddlers and preschoolers a chance to use building blocks or run and jump in place.
Community impact
Big Play on Laundry Day has given kids another reason to smile, play and interact. The project has also had an immediate impact on the look of the space and the laundry facilities. Neighbors expressed their appreciation that someone cares. Due to the success of Big Play on Laundry Day, the community has installed play in housing complex waiting areas and has added both youth and adult volunteers to monitor the spaces.
