No, only residents of the United States may participate in this video contest. Playgrounds must be built on United States soil.

Your video, application and supporting documents must be complete and submitted to KaBOOM! by Friday, May 5, 2017 at 11:59PM EST..

Your video should:

  • Introduce us to the kids in your community
  • Show us why your community needs a new playground
  • Demonstrate how and where kids are currently playing in the community
  • Incorporate the voices and ideas of kids, parents and other caring adults in your community who are making it easier for kids to play
  • Encourage more kids and families to get out and play!
  • Be no longer than 2 minutes in length.
  • Videos longer than 2 minutes will not be considered.

A panel of judges from KaBOOM! and Dr Pepper Snapple Group will determine the top ten finalists for public voting. Finalists will be determined based on demonstration of need for a new playground as well as overall content and quality of the video.

Videos must be submitted with applications to KaBOOM! by 11:59PM EST May 5, 2017. On Friday, June 9, 2017, the ten finalists who have been selected for the online vote will be notified. Voting will take place on facebook.com/letsplay from Monday, June 12, 2017 until Friday, June 23, 2017.

Winners will be notified on Monday, June 26, 2017.

  1. Create your video and upload it to your computer.
  2. Next, sign into youtube.com. If you do not have an existing account, you will need to create one.
  3. Upload your video into your account.
  4. Once your video has loaded to YouTube.com, sign into apply.kaboom.org. If you do not have an existing account, you will need to create one.
  5. Once you are signed in, you must select the Let’s Play Video Contest on the drop down menu. You will then be able to add your video link into the application.
  6. After adding the video link, you will need to complete the entire application in order to be considered for the grant.
  7. Finalists will be selected by a panel of judges made of up representatives from KaBOOM! and Dr Pepper Snapple Group based on the video and the content of the application.

Feel free to enter a video in the competition, but be aware that if you are selected for a different KaBOOM! grant, you will no longer be eligible for the Video Contest grant, even if you've been voted the winner of the competition before you're selected for the other grant opportunity.

In addition to making a video, you need to complete the application and provide supplemental materials in order to be considered as a finalist. You can access the application on apply.kaboom.org beginning on April 3, 2017. It is highly recommend that you begin working on your application at the same time you begin your video so both are ready at the same time. It may take longer than you expect to gather all the materials required for your application! See the official rules for details.

Try borrowing a video camera or webcam from a friend, a relative, a local library, or school. Be sure that you'll be able to borrow not only the camera, but any accessories that come with it (battery charger, software, and cable to connect it to a computer). Note that many digital cameras and cell phones may limit your recording time and don't record audio. Be sure to test it first. Check out the tips page for more ideas.

If you're working from a video camera, it should come with a cable to connect itself to your computer. If you're working from a cell phone, you may be able to email the video to yourself. If not, contact your cell phone service provider for help.

Videos will be shared through social media sites including Facebook and Twitter. KaBOOM! reserves the right to remove any videos upon notification participations do not wish to be included.

You can change the video link in your application up until the point that you fully submit your application. After that, none of your application materials, including your video, can be changed. Please note, there can be only one video entry per application. If you submit a link to a new video, it will replace your old one.

The top projects in this competition will receive a $20,000 grant for the playground equipment purchase.

Three stipulations apply:

  • The equipment must be ordered from a KaBOOM! Preferred Vendor (Miracle Recreation, Landscape Structures, Playworld Systems, BCI Burke)
  • Your total equipment purchase must have a list price value of at least $24,000
  • The applicant must agree to use the KaBOOM! Community-Build Model to execute this project.

The KaBOOM! Build a Playground Toolkit is a great planning tool to guide you through the community build playground planning process. It also contains many informational resources that will support you efforts to plan, fundraise and build a playground.

KaBOOM! cannot recover any unsaved responses that are lost due to power or internet outages. To avoid the risk of losing your application answers, we strongly recommend you save the application before leaving it for an extended period of time.

Set a project completion date or Build Date (when your playground will be constructed). Setting a firm Build Date and working backwards from that date improves your chance of success!

Make sure you're aware of all required documents before starting your application. You will be required to submit a number of supplemental documents in addition to complete narrative essays. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Provide a detailed and complete fundraising plan. The review committee takes a very careful look at each applicant's fundraising plan to ensure that the applicant has the capacity to raise the necessary funds. Be sure to describe past successes and realistic future plans.

Give detailed examples of how you are using or plan to use the Community-Build Model. Use of the Community-Build Model is central to our grant programs and will only strengthen your application.

Make sure the estimated cost for playground equipment on your budget is at least $24,000. Applications that submit playground equipment (only) budgets of less than $24,000 will not be eligible.

Please do not send applications via postage mail or fax. We will only receive applications and materials via our online application system, so that everything can be received by the deadline.
