If a pathway is an option for enhancing your play environment, this fun way of making stepping stones is a great activity for adults and children. Be creative and add colorful bits and pieces, or fun designs to your stepping stones.
Sort all materials into piles by like items to ensure you have materials needed to complete project.
Lay down drop cloth or paint in an area that can be easily cleaned of excess paint.
If the pavers will be painted, first coat with a layer of concrete primer.
Paint all of the 12in pavers as desired when the concrete primer is dry.
Prepare the pathway by digging down 1-2". Level the area with a tamp to provide a flat surface on which to lay the pavers.
Before building, inventory and sort all of your materials.
Ensure that the ground surface is flat and level. If the surface is not level use a piece of wood or durable straight edge to create a level surface. If needed, lay more paver sand and level as shown below.
When laying the pavers, check the spaces in between each paver. The spaces should all be the same distance apart. The closer the bricks are together, the better. If sand prevents this, clear out the excess sand and lay the brick again.
After all the bricks have been laid, pour leftover paver sand over the top. Using your push broom, sweep the excess sand off allowing the space between each paver to be filled.
Optional Edging: Lay the edging along the outside of the pavers. Make sure that the edging is as tight up against the pavers as possible. This will prevent movement over time.
