Town of Benson
We will be installing colorful sidewalk paintings and interactive play equipment for children and families to play without having to go to a playground. The prints will be installed at high traffics areas with a focus being on the Mary Duncan Public Library sidewalks and entrances. The prints will be easily accessible to all residents and will encourage play and increase physical activity. We have recently added some of these pieces of art to a community park and it is not only decorative, but been very well received and frequently used. We would also like to add several interactive vertical play spaces at the areas near the library. These will include vertical play panels with moveable objects that will engage youngster's minds.
The library hosts many activities for it's visitors, all of which are at no cost. These include Summer Reading Programs, Pajama Story time and outreach programs to special needs populations. Benson's median income is $31,000 making Benson's population, at last report, 43.8% below the poverty level. Many of the library's estimated 2,000 visitors per month or 24,000 per year are among this percentage. The playful additions will be accessible to many low income families. One of the very alluring aspects of this project is that weather folks are visiting the library or just passing by, the playspaces are available to any and everyone. We will be installing four different play prints which will include hopscotch, alphabet and number sets and hand and foot prints. The play panels located on the side of the library will include a spelling panel and an interactive play panel.
