Big Play on Laundry Day
Our idea to increase play in two Spartanburg housing complexes is Big Play on Laundry Day. The overall idea to make the routine often dreaded visits to do laundry exciting and playful. What was once only a time to have kids sit and be quiet or play video games is now an adventure each time and it's only a short distance from home. No cars needed.
Families can engage in hopping skipping and nature finds on the way to the facility. There will even be a seasonal reading trail. Once there, they can play sidewalk games just outside the entrance. Inside is a brightly decorated space with challenges and encouragement to stay active on the walls and windows. Comfortable seating and game tables are the stage to try and emerge a winner in a number of family games. Parents of younger kids have access to area rugs to give toddlers and preschoolers a chance to use building blocks or run and jump in place.
Our choices of materials can be easily maintained or renewed at little cost. Everyone is excited to return because the games and activities change each month| thanks to teenage Recreation Mentees who live on site. Recreation Mentees are directed by one of our Parks and Playgrounds Recreation Specialist. Parents and caregivers are allowed to become kids again, while waiting for the washers and driers to complete their cycles. Doing laundry will never be the same.
