A-Mazing Sidewalk Adventure
Sidewalks act as mazes, safely linking one place with another. In generationally impoverished neighborhoods like ours, sidewalks are not useable. The undersused sidewalks in our neighborhood inspired us to build a series of maze-like playscapes along the hidden sidewalk that connects Pecan Park Elementary with our neighborhood. The A-Mazing Sidewalk Adventure will be an interactive walk-n-play that mazes into 7 themed "stations" meandering on and off of vacant lots that will encourage 400+ area kids to play along their way to/from school.
"Observation Station" will begin with an adventure wheel with riddle facts, play challenges and scavenger hunts; whimsical seek and find sidewalk art; life size ant farm and magnified bug displays; bobble head sculpture; assemblage rainwater table; border garden and sidewalk bridge.
"Cooperation Station" Kids will access the yard by way of a loopy path that spells "play" from the sidewalk; a low ropes course will provide challenging fun; an existing slab will be transformed into a canopy-covered gamepad; DIY benches and tables will be stationed throughout. The sidewalk will be painted as a comic strip about making wise decisions.
"Creation Station" Will feature a labyrinth made of recycled materials and found objects with hidden craft activities. The slab at the edge of the lot will be painted as a coloring book mural for chalk play.
"Sensation Station" Kids will find a wildflower meadow with bird houses, earthworm feeders, bug tower, edible plants, textured seating, tree battery charging station and winding footpath.
"Motivation Station" Includes a mutable greenspace with trees on wheels to create a moving forest and mobile, interactive activity walls that get kids moving. In the forest along the property line, tree sculptures and a hidden wonderland will intrigue kids along the way.
"Celebration Station" Will feature a tree canopy and bordered bamboo -- a kid oasis. A mosaic tile slab will be a splash pad on weekends and in summer, and an outdoor lounge and stage. Instruments will be stationed around the perimeter with tree stump seating and benches. A stilt sculpture will welcome kids.
"Imagination Station" Will provide a pop-up play space fenced with banners of children's art and two giant word benches that spell IMAGINE, acting as bus stop seating (middle/high school) and climbing play. Floating tree tents, express yourself murals, giant games, and movie nights fill the lot.
