Way to Play
Way to Play puts games in public spaces, giving parents and kids local and accessible options for play in New York City.
About the project
In partnership with kids and parents in the neighborhood, Way to Play bridges the main elementary school in the community with a large block of public housing. Community members can find simple spray chalked games in high-traffic public spaces between home, work, school and transportation. New games are rolled out on a regular basis, and are based on ideas that come from play design workshops, which are held with kids in the community. This keeps the games feeling fresh and builds anticipation for new games. The workshops also give kids and parents ownership of the play ideas, offering the types of play that reflect the local community.
Way to Play sparks the imagination, opens people up to discussion and reframes the world for the community. This playful intervention meets families in convenient locations and helps them turn in between places into playful moments. Kids show excitement and appreciation for the games, seeing them as both an opportunity to play and a piece of public art that visually enlivens the space.
