Living Streets Alliance
An interactive and vibrant corridor along Menor Stravenue in Tucson, Arizona, offers unifying and playful spaces in an otherwise barren and neglected corridor that many families traverse daily.
About the project
Playful Gardens connects families to Pueblo Gardens Elementary school, the Boys and Girls Club, and Pueblo Gardens park. The project utilizes low-cost solutions to address traffic safety concerns, while transforming Menor Stravenue into a colorful, vibrant corridor that invites movement and interaction. The components include:
- A "Playful Gardens" foot path painted with games, obstacles and play stations.
- Splashes of color and neighborhood art curated by students and neighborhood residents.
- Greening and beautification to provide shade and prevent run-off onto the sidewalk, which is covered by sand and dirt.
- Playful crosswalks painted to include hopscotch or dance steps in order to increase visibility and encourage students to use it to get to the school entrance.
Students loved being able to participate in the creation of the Playful Gardens project and many have voiced their excitement and enthusiasm for painting their street. Playful Gardens has had a very encouraging impact on the neighborhood, and reaffirms the uniqueness that many of the neighbors see and recognize about their own community.
