The Playable Sidewalk
Kids living on and near Lancaster Ave in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, now have safe spaces to gather, play, create and exercise.
About the project
The Playable Sidewalk engages local youth who routinely visit a community-focused maker space that caters to supportive housing facilities near Lancaster Ave. An addition to the successful Switchback Benches that were installed last summer, the project offers playable bike racks and planters. Community members of all ages co-design the playable sidewalk amenities to support broader play, social and infrastructural needs.
The Lancaster Ave installation is very noticeable, which signifies that investments and improvements in the neighborhood are happening. By engaging people throughout the duration of the project, local residents of all ages have gained new skills and become more connected to one another. These new relationships have strengthened trust and pride in neighborhood.
