About the project

Located in a new park adjacent to low income neighborhoods, The Place Where They Play offers play panels with ideas for movements, such as skip, hop or jump. Etched on the panels are configurations of games from both the Cherokee past and present. Each etching has an accompanying audio device with instructions to play a game. A toolkit offers the community ideas to continue playing with their kids at home, and helps them understand the impact that play has on development during their formative years.

Community impact

Thanks to The Place Where They Play, more kids are visiting the relatively new park. The project gives adults a chance to visit with one another, and families time to share and watch their kids play. By learning new games, kids realize that trying new things is fun. The play strategies designed in this project give low income kids and families opportunities to interact socially, which assists with leveling the playing field in emotional development.
