About the project

Artist and designer Falon Mihalic partnered with the Open Architecture Institute Houston to develop an interactive 3000 square feet musical space at the Leonel Castillo Community Center. Esquina de Musica also ties into the adjacent White Oak Bayou Greenway Trail.

Kids gave design input on the pieces through brainstorming sessions, where they played with various types of known and ‘found’ instruments made from everyday household items like house keys or coffee cans. The kids were also encouraged to invent new musical instruments too.

Community impact

On the day of the project opening, volunteers began the day with a tree planting project to complement the space. Now that the installation is complete, an artist from Da Camera Young Artist Program plans to work with the community center to create a music program around the instruments.
