Design to Move
Let’s take the stairs! Design to Move: Stair Trek (DTM) transforms dingy city stairwells into magical art-installations and whimsical interactive play experiences.
About the project
Did you know? Stairwells are the most under-used and least-engaging space in a building. In partnership with the Madison Children's Museum, DTM converts four stairwells into physically immersive play experiences using sound, light, color, paint, mosaic, metal and a host of natural materials. The new stairwells can be found in a community center, city park, government building, early learning center and homeless shelter, giving community members in Madison's low income neighborhoods easy access to active play.
The new stairwells have made the Madison community feel lighter, more joyful, more playful and fun. More than 400 kids contributed drawings that were then painted onto the stairwell, resulting in a kid's view of their hometown. Families that face difficult circumstances now feel "seen" or appreciated in ways that they never dreamed possible. Kids have an increased sense of pride seeing their dreams inform tangible projects in the community.
