Partnership for Providence Parks
Board Play provides community members with playful and challenging board game-like activities along unused pathways in Providence, Rhode Island.
About the project
Spray painted stencils call out activities that lead kids through a series of games as they make their way from parks to recreation centers. Using input from kids in the community, Board Play includes a game board with games that are easy to play, like tic-tac-toe and hopscotch. The stencils also encourage kids and adults to "hop like a frog," "run around" or "spin backwards" as they make their way around the city.
Board Play attracts people to spaces that would otherwise be underused. The recreation centers now have boxes of chalk so that kids playing on the game board can interact in new, creative ways. Including kids in the planning process helped them gain a sense of pride and ownership in their Board Play game board, and fueled their confidence to interact with the design in a way that made it their own.
