Promote Health

Achieve Equitable Progress Towards Positive Health Outcomes

Social determinants of health, including the built environment, are key to promoting a healthy lifestyle starting in childhood. Today, people of color face disparities in access to spaces meant to promote health through play as a result of systemic racism and disinvestment.

Playspaces are treasured community assets that provide families with great opportunities to enjoy time outdoors, which studies demonstrate can reduce stress and improve overall health and well-being. At KABOOM!, we work alongside communities and our partners to help address the need for equitable access to playspaces and their associated health benefits.

We mobilize communities by listening to their unique goals, responding to their desires, and leveraging assets in order to achieve sustainable progress towards these goals.

Working with Partners Committed to Health

Alongside our partners, we have brought play to thousands of children in order to support community health.

With the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, KABOOM! is providing kids with equitable access to great new places for active play across Western New York and Southeast Michigan — including through Play Everywhere challenges that create playspaces in unexpected public spaces, as well as the planning and construction of new, large-scale community playgrounds with innovative design.

Since 2010, UnitedHealthcare has partnered with KABOOM! as part of their “Do Good. Live Well.” employee volunteer program that is dedicated, in part, to decreasing obesity and increasing physical activity. This partnership supports UnitedHealthcare’s goal to help people live healthier lives by creating places for families to be active together across the country.

In partnership with the Colorado Health Foundation and rural communities across Colorado impacted by disinvestment, we offer kids and community members play options that best meet their needs, be it a playground for children two to twelve, or an Adventure Course that creates challenging play opportunities for older kids.

Together with our partners, we are committed to deepening our knowledge of the relationship between access to playspaces and health, and building equitable places to play that have the ability to promote the well-being kids and communities.
