Playground grants to help communities build safe places for kids to play
Responding to Community Play Needs
Our priority and focus is always on the safety and well-being of kids. As we prepare for the eventual reopening and building of playgrounds once health authorities deem it safe to play again, we will help ensure that communities are able to build and kids are as safe as possible when they return to the playground.
We’ve thoughtfully paired the feedback from our communities with the latest COVID-19 safety guidelines from local, national and global health authorities, to inform a responsive approach to our projects. With a few changes to our process, we can be able to ensure every kid has an amazing place to play.
How Our Programs and Processes are Changing
We know that time and capacity for completing things like grant applications might be limited right now. We don’t want the technicalities of an application to stand in the way of creating play spaces with communities that need it most. So KABOOM! is adapting our standard application in favor of an abbreviated Playspace Interest Form to give us the essential information we need to know.
We know what resources it takes to build a play space. We also know that this pandemic has left some communities with fewer resources than before. We are partnering with communities to understand what assets they can devote to a project, working together to creatively plan for the ways we can fill in the gaps.
Virtual Design Days
Design Days are at the heart of how we co-define our projects in partnership with community partners and envision a kid-designed playspace. Where possible, we are co-facilitating Design Days with communities virtually. We’ve created a Kids’ Design Workbook that can be used as a facilitation guide while still allowing kids to design their dream play space. In the cases where a virtual experience isn’t the best option, the same workbook can be sent digitally or shipped directly to our community partners to safely distribute hard copies.
Build Day Reimagined
To protect and ensure the health safety of community members, KABOOM! project managers and funding partner volunteers, all playspace projects will be installed only by the professional team from the equipment manufacturer. While volunteers will not be gathering for the Build Day, KABOOM! staff will work directly with our partners to plan for post-build engagement opportunities to celebrate the play space.
