Today in Play: Saturday is Grandparents Day

Kids playingThere is a lot of great play news to report today!

This Saturday is Grandparents Day! For those in the know, KaBOOM! has partnered with grandparents.com, and for every hour grandparents report spending playing with their grandkids outside, grandparents.com will make a donation to KaBOOM!. This weekend is a great opportunity to rack up some of those hours!

And if you need convincing that outdoor play is awesome, check out the National Wildlife Federation's latest report, Time Out: Using The Outdoors to Enhance Classroom Performance  (pdf), which analyzes the cultural shift from outdoor to indoor play for kids and how it impacts behavior and achievement in school.

Need some inspiration? Here's a great video of a woman telling the story about the playground she helped build with her father and 250+ volunteers at a local school. It's deeply moving. I love this "Aha Moments" series that KaBOOM! partner Mutual of Omaha is doing!

And for those who like to plan ahead, National Bullying Prevention Week is coming up Oct. 4-10. Love Our Children USA is asking everyone to wear a blue shirt on Monday, Oct. 5 to send the message that bullying must be stopped. "The color blue was chosen specifically because in many diverse cultures blue brings peace, importance and confidence," they said in a recent press release. Tell us in the comments if you plan to participate!

"Today in Play" is a regular feature on the KaBOOM! blog, featuring the latest news on play and KaBOOM! media mentions.
