Mayor of Playful City USA community to speak at international conference
In other news, congratulations to Hernando, Miss. Mayor Chip Johnson, who will be speaking at an international workshop on obesity in Washington, D.C. Oct. 22! The workshop is sponsored by the Institute of Medicine and the United Kingdom Department of Health. According to a recent article, "The city's recent designation as a Playful City USA, its efforts to install sidewalks, bike and walking trails, and the development of a community garden and regional farmer's market are among concrete steps Hernando has taken to improve the health of all its citizens, both young and old." Read more about the conference and Hernando's efforts (DeSoto Times Tribune).

Upcoming workshop: "Playground: A Postmodern Laboratory for Fun and Development"
And speaking of workshops, there's one coming up in New York City, led by Carrie Lobman with Ana Marjanovic-Shane that sounds like fun: "The Institute’s Playground series brings together play theory and playful activity in a fun, challenging and philosophically engaging environment where participants can play (and discover) together. " (Sounds like a day at KaBOOM!) You can register here - note that it's limited to 15 participants.

"Today in Play" is a regular feature on the KaBOOM! blog, featuring the latest news on play and KaBOOM! media mentions.
