Presenting the winners! A drum roll, please.

Ladies and gentlemen, KaBOOM! is proud to present the winners of the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Imagination Playground™ in a Box Competition!

UL, a leader in product safety testing and certification services for more than 116 years, sponsored a KaBOOM! contest in which three deserving communities could win the innovative new play equipment, “Imagination Playground™ in a Box” designed by David Rockwell.

So, for the past three months, communities across the country have rallied their neighbors to become a "fan" of their local playground in the KaBOOM! Playspace Finder in hopes of winning. Last month, 18 finalists from schools (as far away as Hawaii!), children’s museums, community centers, and parks garnered impressive amounts of community support and were asked to submit full grant proposals. After careful consideration by our judging panel, the winners are:

  1. City of La Puente/La Puente Park – This 22-acre park serves 41,063 residents, which is six times the number of people a park usually serves. But to try and rise to the challenge, the City is "making a concerted effort to explore all opportunities to expand amenities at the park for our youth."
  2. KIPP Infinity Elementary School -- This KIPP school in Playful City USA community New York City is brand new, has no playground, and serves 460 kids, almost all of whom come from low-income families. This is only the first year of operation for this KIPP school, and with this success under its belt, teachers, staff, and parents are now working on building a traditional playground for their students.
  3. Rolling Terrace Elementary School – This Title 1 school is located in Playful City USA community Takoma Park, Maryland, just outside of Washington DC. The school serves 685 kids whose families hail from dozens of different countries.

We’d like to thank everyone who participated in this contest, and know that your support for your favorite park or playground won’t end here. If your favorite playspace didn’t win this time around, you have another chance to win. Details can be found here: http://www.parents.com/playground

Spread the word and see you on the playground!
