Parks and rec gets funding in stimulus bill!

Over the last two weeks, we've asked you to call your members of Congress to support park funding in the economic stimulus bill. We're very pleased to report that the stimulus bill coming before both houses of Congress today DOES allow communities to use funding to support community parks!

Thank you so much to everyone who called. Here's what the NRPA had to say in their most recent e-newsletter:

NRPA has scored a major victory for communities across America in the negotiations over the economic stimulus bill that is to be considered by both houses of Congress today.

In the language agreed by House and Senate conferees, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will allow communities to use funding from programs such as Community Development Block Grants, transportation infrastructure, and the Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund to support community parks. Without your phone calls and support and the hard work of our Public Policy staff, the bill would have explicitly restricted communities from using these funds to support parks and recreation.

In the coming days, NRPA staff will analyze the details of the bill and report to you on the opportunities available to your community. For now, click here to review a brief report from the NRPA Public Policy Office on this significant accomplishment.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and staff of NRPA, thank you for your efforts to advance our agenda on this and many other issues. If you have any questions, please contact the NRPA Public Policy Office at 202.887.0290.
