Kaboom.org highlights: Playing green

Yes, it’s the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, and our planet could use a little love. Since healthy children and a healthy planet go hand in hand, we’re big fans of green spaces and sustainable practices. Kaboom.org comes in many shades of green—check out some of these highlights:

Not everything at a playground has to be made of plastic. Our Nature Built side project plans come from the first-ever KaBOOM! Nature Build Playground at YMCA Camp Erdman in Waialua, Hawaii. Side projects include a boulder garden, planted discovery maze, and edible forest. Check out all our natural side projects here.
Playing Green

In our Playing Green group, community members can talk about greening playspaces and creating sustainable playgrounds. There, community member bgclub (Boys & Girls Club of Oakhurst) has posted some great photos of children enjoying their community garden, from planting seeds to biting into a juicy piece of homegrown watermelon. Check out and join our Playing Green group here.
Community Service

Planning a community service project? Presented by KaBOOM! and The Home Depot Foundation, our Guidelines for Eco-Friendly Service Projects will help you lessen the environmental impact by generating less waste and reducing energy and materials consumption. You can download a PDF or view our online training.
Harvey and Maple Grove Park

Harvey and Maple Grove Parks, one of our 700+ playspaces in progress, are fundraising to go green. Project leaders say, “The Friends of Harvey and Maple Grove parks are... improving walking trails and adding butterfly meadows and rain gardens. Won't you join us as we work to better our neighborhood and community?” Join the project here.

Help your school or community playspace go green by winning it an eco-friendly Imagination Playground™ in a Box! Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is celebrating Earth Day by helping KaBOOM! save play. Visit our Playspace Finder and become a “fan” of your favorite playspace. Then, get as many people as possible to “fan” your playspace. We’ll take a look at the entries with the most fans and will pick four deserving sites to win! Get started here.
