How to find funding for your project

People ask me this question a lot: How do you find funding for a playground project?

If you'd asked me that before I started working at KaBOOM!, I would have thrown up my hands and said, "I don't know. Hold a bake sale?" But now I know that the picture is much, much broader than that, and that the best fundraising plan involves a lot of different resources coming together.

  1. The first step I recommend to people is to check out the fundraising section of the KaBOOM! Toolkit. It contains a really helpful overview of all the different ways you can fundraise for your project, from those ubiquitous bake sales to applying for grants and everything in between. Once you've read it over, you'll have a better understanding of how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together and have a great start at developing a fundraising strategy.
  2. Next, I'd hop on over to our fabulous online training opportunities. Did you know that KaBOOM! offers both live and on-demand training sessions on a wide array of topics, including grant writing, fundraising, working with the media, and more? You do now. Go check them out - they're free and all you need is a computer with an Internet connection to participate.
  3. The next treasure trove of information I want to highlight is our message boards. Sometimes people post grant opportunities there, and it's a great place to solicit ideas and feedback for your fundraising strategy. The people there are friendly and eager to help, so don't be shy about jumping in!
  4. If you want to do a fundraising event, we've got lots of ideas for you beyond bake sales (not that I mind a good bake sale, mind you!). In fact, we've got a vast database of over 150 fundraising ideas, featuring everything from grocery bagging to flamingo hops! There are helpful tips for implementing each, so be sure to check it out.
  5. Finally, I'd be negligent if I didn't point out that KaBOOM! also offers ongoing opportunities for community organizations to build a new playground or skatepark, thanks to the generosity of our many corporate partners. You can learn more and apply for those opportunities here.
