Clowns are out, service is in. Recognizing that kids love to feel helpful almost as much as they love a good party, The Good Fun! Book helps young children engage in their communities to do some good by throwing a party to benefit a local charity.
The 12 party plans in this book, one for each month of the year, include an animal lovers party, a planting party, and a bookworm party. Activities range from stuffing old pillowcases to donate to shelters as dog or cat beds, to creating milk jug birdhouses for community gardens, to painting and decorating bookshelves for crisis centers.
The book is co-written by Kate Hannigan Issa, a professional writer and editor for children, and Karen Duncan, a former teacher, current Senior Advisor to the CEO and Senior Management of KaBOOM!, and the wife of U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Karen and Kate got the idea when their kids decided to set up and run a lemonade stand to save the pandas, donating all proceeds to the World Wildlife Fund. They saw firsthand the satisfaction their children derived from engaging in service—and all the fun they had doing it!
The book is being released today, just in time for Make A Difference Day. Click here to see if there’s a book party event coming up near you. Kids can also deepen their impact by sending a short video clip of their party or photos and a short essay to the publisher, Blue Marlin Publications. Once every three months, Blue Marlin will review the submitted videos and essays, pick a winning party, and send that party's charity a check for $100.
We’ve known all along that service and play go hand in hand. It’s time to get in on the Good Fun!
