Design Day held for intergenerational playground in San Francisco

Maria Shriver, California Volunteers and KaBOOM! will be building an intergenerational playground in San Francisco June 22 to honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez in conjunction with the 2009 National Conference on Volunteering & Service. The Design Day was held Apr. 30 at Bret Harte Elementary School.

Since this playspace will be deliberately intergenerational in design, seniors will be specifically involved in the planning process, the build and the maintenance. So it was critical seniors be involved in Design Day, too - and the majority of adults who attended were seniors, all extremely involved and excited to be there!

Vera and Larry Hollingworth, who have 6 great grandchildren at the school, volunteered to be on several committees. The planning committees include neighbors, parents, grandparents, great grandparents, staff and community members. It was a great day for community building!

The playspace project will include a community garden and service learning components (check out our brand-new youth service learning activity guide).
