14 years, 1,800 playgrounds!

Today, starting at 8:30 a.m., communities in Newark and Chicago will be simultaneously building playgrounds. The first to be completed will earn the distinction of being the 1,800th KaBOOM! playground. Ready, set, go!

The City of Newark, the Greater Newark Conservancy, and the D3 South Community Empowerment Group are working with support from The Home Depot Foundation to build a playground for 300 children in the South Ward area of Newark. Well-known Newark Mayor Cory Booker is attending the build at noon.

The South Ward area consists of over 35 blocks of mostly residential living spaces with only one very old park. The new park will be replacing a vacant lot and will provide much-needed recreation space to support the large influx of new families moving into the neighborhood.

The Home Depot Foundation is also helping the Oakwood Shores housing development and Community Builders, Inc. in Chicago to build a playground for 300 children at the Oakwood Shores complex. Currently there is no playground within walking distance for the children who live at Oakwood Shores to enjoy.

Keep an eye on our Twitter stream for updates from each build throughout the day.
