'09 flashback: First Lady builds a playground

Michelle ObamaWhat a year it's been! Every Friday between now and New Year's Day, I'm going to look back on a highlight from 2009.

On June 22, KaBOOM! partnered with CaliforniaVolunteers, California First Lady Maria Shriver, and First Lady Michelle Obama to build an amazing new playground at Bret Harte Elementary School in San Francisco, Calif. as a part of the Conference on Volunteering and Service. At the build, First Lady Obama kicked off the United We Serve summer initiative, a program intended to renew the American spirit of volunteerism and service. It was an amazing moment for everyone involved!

You can check out some videos here and photos here.

You can also read First Lady Obama's speech from the build. My favorite quote of hers is this one: "Organizations like KaBOOM! are necessary, not just to the health of our children but to the health of the entire nation." WOW.

This particular build was one of 163 playgrounds KaBOOM! built this year with our generous corporate funders and amazing community partners, and one of 1739 total builds we'll have completed from our inception through the end of 2009. In the past 13 years these playgrounds, built by hundreds of thousands of volunteers, have served over 4 million children who may not otherwise had a safe and fun place to play near them.

Make a donation to KaBOOM! today to invest in our children’s future. When you do, you’ll join thousands of volunteers and supporters working every day to give our children the time – and the wonderful play spaces – they deserve.
