Project Management Intern (DC)

Project Manager

Department Description:

The Project Management Intern will help support the Project Managers on KaBOOM! community-build playground projects including the pre-build and Build Days facilitating the playground preparations and construction. KaBOOM! playground projects are located all across the United States and travel is required with this internship.

Key Responsibilities of Internship:

  • Provide support to the lead Project Manager on playground Prep Days and Build Days (requires travel to location of event),
  • Acquire knowledge on playground equipment and play environment project construction,
  • Motivate volunteers to maintain momentum and enthusiasm on Build Day,
  • Work with Project Managers to trouble shoot potential project challenges,
  • Maintain safety on the Build site,
  • Organize tools, equipment and materials before Build Day,
  • Assist with site preparations (digging, checking and adjusting holes, inventorying tools and materials, guiding volunteers in lumber cutting, etc.),
  • Guide volunteers with playground assembly, movement of safety surfacing, and concrete mixing,
  • Provide support to the Administrative Coordinators and Project Managers,
  • Learn the KaBOOM! database system and enter, review and track critical information to ensure accuracy of reports
  • Assist Project Managers with developing, submitting, checking and confirming orders for materials
  • Upload photos from Build Days to our internal network, and
  • Help with various special projects for the Project Management team.

  • Must possess excellent computer skills and be adept at word processing, Excel, PowerPoint and database management 
  • Preferred candidate will have completed their sophomore year of college and has a genuine interest in learning about a non-profit organization
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Other Essential Functions:

The Intern must have the ability to maintain acceptable standards of office conduct, to handle high pressure situations, get along with others, and work on a computer. Although most days will be spent in the field, office days may involve sitting at a desk and using a computer for up to 8 hours. 

Community-build playground days and site preparation for Build Days may entail being on feet for 15 hours, in all weather conditions and on active construction sites with moving equipment. Builds may be scheduled on any day of the week, including weekends, but the management team will work with the Intern to ensure Builds coordinate with her/his schedule. Each work week will have 5 work days and 2 days off.

Aspects of this job are physically demanding. The Intern should be able to lift up to 50 lbs and to reach above head, holding pieces of playground equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Similarly, the Intern must be able to bend down, walk on uneven surfacing, and operate a wheelbarrow containing up to 200 pounds. The Intern will often use a shovel to scoop and lift mulch onto a tarp, then carry the tarp filled with mulch (weighing up to 40 pounds) a distance of up to 200 feet. This process may be repeated multiple times for up to 4 hours. The Intern will need motor skills to operate tools, such as hammers, wrenches, ratchets, drills, shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, post hole diggers and allen keys.

Work Hours:

  • Approximately 35+ hours per week.

Length of Internship:

  • Flexible, between 8+ weeks.

Salary/Stipend:

  • This is an unpaid internship.
