Community Engagement Intern

Reports to: 
Manager, Playful City USA

Department Description:

The Mass Action team encourages individuals, businesses, organizations, and agencies to move from small acts of community involvement to larger acts of leadership with the purpose of achieving better public policy, funding and awareness to increase play opportunities nationwide.  The Community Engagement staff is directly responsible for supporting grass roots initiatives by creating opportunities for individuals and communities to learn and share ideas needed to build a playground on their own and solicit their local municipalities to create a playful community.

Key Responsibilities of Internship:

  • Assist with the development and implementation of on-line trainings to recruit new Playful City USA communities to share Best Practices in Play across the network.
  • Implement strategies to recruit new cities and towns to successfully submit the Playful City USA application.
  • Extract and analyze application data and prepare impact reports for program evaluation.
  • Work directly with recognized communities to collect their community’s Best Practice in Play.
  • Aggregate and analyze potential city-partners that might be interested or have expressed interest in the Playful City USA program.
  • Support the Playful City USA team to administer the construction and access grants to Playful City USA communities to aid the program in achieving its metrics as established by a national philanthropic grant.
  • Contribute to the overall goals of the department and KaBOOM! by helping in other departmental programs as needed.
  • Conduct research on play related best practices including but not limited to: community building, working with government agencies, playgrounds.

Key Qualifications:

  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, including writing and an aptitude for working with others
  • Ability to work independently within a team environment
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Proficient in the use of databases, email, and general computer applications
  • Interest in community development, civic engagement and parks and recreation is highly desireable

Work Hours:

  • Flexible, 15-25 hours/week.

Length of Internship:

  • Flexible, ideally 12-15 weeks; beginning immediately.

Salary/Stipend:

  • This is an unpaid internship.
