Wordless Wednesday: Amazing play structures from Copenhagen

These highly imaginative and exciting play structures from Copenhagen, Denmark are the work of a playground design group called MONSTRUM. A group of artists and theatrical set-designers, MONSTRUM focuses on visual design, motor challenges, safety, and they believe that, "playground design should be a reflection of the world surrounding us."

I certaintly hope there aren't giant spiders rampaging across the streets of Copenhagen, but if there are, I'm glad to see they've inspired these incredibly imaginative play structures.

There are many more interesting designs and pictures of the playgrounds above on the MONSTRUM website. What's the most interesting play structure you have seen? Have you added it to the Map of Play yet?

Tree house in Fairfax, VA comes off the chopping block

We have a happy ending to one of our previous Play Hater stories.

Back in October, we reported about a Fairfax, VA zoning board that ordered Iraq War veteran Mark Grapin to take down the tree house he built in his backyard for his two sons. The zoning board issued the order because Grapin's home is on the corner of his street, technically making his backyard a front yard according to zoning regulations.

Mark GrapinThe story started making local and national headlines and a Change.org petition was quickly launched, asking the Farifax County Board of Zoning Appeals to reverse the order to destroy the tree house. On November 30th, The Washington Post reported that the board voted 5-0 in Grapin’s favor, allowing the tree house to stay up, provided they plant some more trees around the house.

We applaud the board’s decision and are thankful that Grapin’s boys will have a place to spend hours of imaginative outdoor play.

KaBOOM! is on Tumblr

Introducing a whole new way to follow KaBOOM!-- the KaBOOM! Tumblr blog!

Tumblr is a super-easy way to blog photos, quotes, links, and much more. It’s an elegant and simple way to share things on the internet, but more importantly, it has produced a vibrant, fun, and often hilarious community of bloggers that has helped us discover stories about playgrounds we might not have found in other social networks.

The KaBOOM! Tumblr blog has been running since June. Take a look at some of our most popular and favorite posts, and if you are a Tumblr user, visit our page and follow us!

In this post, a fellow Tumblr blogger discovers that KaBOOM! is a real organization and not the elaborate prank as depcited on Parks and Recreation:

Pleading ignorance here that KaBOOM! was merely an "elaborate prank" disguised as a non-profit playground-building organization on NBC's 'Parks and Recreation.'  But not so, which makes it even more awesomesauce, to use an appropriate term of art.

Finally, one of our followers was kind enough to explain what this is:

Vintage playground equiment

There were all different colours of these "spinning eggs", I'm not sure what their actual name was, that was just what everyone called them as kids. It was basically a pole with a disc in the center which you grabbed and 'turned', though the actual 'egg' would turn, the pole was cemented into the ground. So you were basically turning this giant egg with you and another inside it, faster and faster. They were great fun but a rarity these days as they are deemed "too dangerous" for small children. Quite a shame really ): But hey - your Tumblr and organization is great! I love it! Glad I discovered you!

Get Your Move On!

Let's MoveAlmost one year ago, on February 9th, First Lady Michelle Obama launched "Let's Move" a national call to action to end childhood obesity in one generation. Our CEO Darell Hammond plus other non-profit leaders, braved one of the worst snowstorms Washington D.C. has ever seen to get to the White House for the launch. Since then, the First Lady and Let’s Move have transformed attitudes about our children’s health.

Today, KaBOOM! will be on a conference call with Mrs. Obama and other leaders and will highlight the incredible efforts taking place in communities across the country to improve physical activity in children’s daily lives. Darell will also discuss the Play Deficit and how citizens everywhere can take action to bring play back to our children’s lives.

Over the past year:

  • Hundreds of local governments, thousands of individuals, and countless other organizations across the country worked to help KaBOOM! map America’s playgrounds, and the accompanying Play Deficit. Using our online Playspace Finder, people across the country have added and rated more than 80,000 records to help us get a snapshot of the national state of play, but we have much more work to do. Once the nation sees where the playgrounds are and aren’t, we’ll be better able to see which communities need help to build and improve their places to play.
  • KaBOOM! continues to work hand-in-hand with incredible communities that want to build and improve their playgrounds. So far, more than 1,900 communities have stepped up to the plate to build a playground with KaBOOM!, and through our online tools, trainings and grants, almost 2,000 more communities worked together to create great places for their kids to play in 2010.
  • One hundred and eighteen communities made play a priority last year, and to honor their efforts, KaBOOM! honored each with its Playful City USA recognition. KaBOOM! is helping to spread the word about the best practices these cities use to increase play opportunities. Now KaBOOM! is offering community-built playgrounds and joint-use agreements to provide a lot of playful bang for the buck.
  • In September 2010, more than 1,600 communities joined the Play Day movement this year, and called on hundreds of thousands of our citizens to advocate for a minimum of 60 minutes of outdoor play every day.

So, happy birthday Let’s Move, and a huge and hearty thank you to the millions of KaBOOM! fans who helped the nation get a "move" on. We could never have done it without you.

Let's Move! initiative keeps things moving along

This afternoon at the White House, the First Lady convened a task force of childhood obesity experts, government officials, industry leaders and community activists to come up with a strategy on how to make communities healthier for children. For more than four hours, they discussed how to provide healthy food at schools; improve access to healthy, affordable food in local communities; and get kids more physically active.

Access to playgrounds was a big part of the physical activity break-out session, and the panel came up with the following recommendations:

  • Extend the school day and include physical activity as a key part of the day
  • Define "physical activity" and make sure the definition is not just limited to include sports
  • Focus on the built environment with play spaces that are NOT just for team sports
  • Create safe walking routes to parks
  • Invest in parks infrastructure
  • Promote joint-use agreements as a way to increase access to existing spaces
  • Aggregate and disseminate replicable best practices
  • Focus on engaging parents

We couldn't agree more and look forward to working with communities across the country to implement some of these recommendations.

KaBOOM! offers “shovel-ready” projects to support First Lady's anti-obesity initiative

In the coming weeks, First Lady Michelle Obama will begin her campaign against childhood obesity. In response to her campaign, KaBOOM! CEO Darell Hammond has pledged that KaBOOM! will support the initative as a "shovel-ready" solution. KaBOOM! has the programs to make quick, measurable differnces in a child's activity level, a key part of giving kids a healty, active lifestyle.

KaBOOM! OFFERS "SHOVEL-READY" PROJECTS TO SUPPORT FIRST LADY’S ANTI-OBESITY INITIATIVE

As First Lady Michelle Obama prepares to launch her campaign against childhood obesity on Tuesday, KaBOOM! CEO Darell Hammond has pledged support for the initiative and said his national playground-building organization offers a "shovel-ready" solution to help get kids moving.

KaBOOM! uses corporate and individual donations to help communities build playgrounds in underserved neighborhoods. Over the past 14 years the organization has helped build more than 1,700 playgrounds across the U.S., mostly in inner cities.

"Like us, Mrs. Obama knows that having a great playground nearby is a key ingredient in giving kids a healthy, active life," said Hammond. "That's why she volunteered last year on a KaBOOM! build, and why she called our work ‘necessary … to the health of the entire nation.' We're looking forward to working with new partners inspired by her call to fight childhood obesity."

Specifically, Hammond urged corporations to support non-profits – KaBOOM! and others – that can make a quick, measurable difference in kids' activity levels. "KaBOOM! has turn-key programs that can make a fast but lasting impact in child-rich but playground poor communities," he said. "These neighborhoods are full of children who hunger for play – and the impact on their young lives is both immediate and profound." Since a Harris Interactive study found that 59% of parents and 69% of low-income parents report there is no playground in their neighborhood, getting playgrounds built near where children live is a key factor in ensuring they're active every day.

To combat childhood obesity on the local and national level, KaBOOM! offers turn-key programs for corporations, local governments, neighborhoods and individuals. By forming corporate partnerships, KaBOOM! is able to fund playground builds in underserved areas. Currently, 93 local governments are working with KaBOOM! as part of the Playful City USA program, which gets kids active and healthy through play by providing mayors with proven strategies, best practices and tools that bring public and private sectors together and engage citizens. Thousands of citizens and schools are using the Do-It-Yourself tools on kaboom.org, which walk them step-by-step through the process of building a playground in their community.

KaBOOM! has already helped thousands of communities across the country turn the tide on childhood obesity by ensuring that children have the time and space to play every day. And KaBOOM! has the capacity to help thousands more. Anyone interested in answering the First Lady's call to action can get more information on the power of play at www.kaboom.org.
