Soldiers, BigToys build playground in Iraq

SoldierI love looking at the videos posted by members of the KaBOOM! community. Here's one that particularly caught my eye recently.

Playground equipment manufacturer BigToys posted this video, and quite frankly, it makes me a bit misty-eyed. Here's how they describe it:

"When he was deployed in Iraq, Landscape Architect and Army Reserve Sgt. Lucas Murray wanted to do something special for the kids there. BigToys was thrilled to participate by donating a structure, our second in Iraq."

Kids needed for play design competition

Playable KidsPlayable 2010, a brand-new international design competition, invites designers of all types from around the world to design playground equipment and spaces that will "give a sense of place, wonder and fun so strong that they will entice children outdoors to play." You may remember the launch last month, and now they need kids to show the designers what "fun" is all about!

As the kickoff for Playable 2010, Playable Kids is a contest that asks children around the world to draw pictures of what fun looks like to them. Their drawings will serve to educate and inspire the architects, artists, designers, landscape architects and others who will enter the Playable 2010 International Design Competition later this year. It is a great opportunity for kids to use their creativity to help others. The winning "kid designers" will even have the opportunity to be interviewed to explain their "philosophy of play" to the pros!

The deadline for kids to enter has been extended to Feb. 26 (or Feb. 12 for entries coming from outside the United States). You can download the entry form here (pdf) and instruction sheet here (pdf). More details and entry information can be found on the Playable Kids website.

The competition is presented by the Atlanta Task Force on Play (founded by KaBOOM! Playmaker Cynthia Gentry) and Georgia Tech in partnership with the City of Atlanta, Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs; Park Pride; and the Atlanta Beltline.

Pro Bowl players building playground today

Pro BowlBefore they compete in the 2010 Pro Bowl Jan. 31, some of the NFL’s biggest stars are coming together together as one team today to build a playground with KaBOOM! as part of the largest community program in the league’s history. Following morning practices Pro Bowl players, coaches and Bank of America community volunteers will spend the afternoon working to improve the South Florida community as part of the first-ever "NFL PLAY 60 Community Blitz" in celebration of the Pro Bowl.

The playground build will take place at RISE Academy School of Science and Technology, a free public charter elementary school in Broward County. Players will be joined by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith, as well as ESPN commentators Jon Gruden, Ron Jaworski and Mike Tirico and will work with KaBOOM!, RISE students, Bank of America associates and other community volunteers to construct a customized playground at the school, which is currently without a gym or play area.

Simultaneously, other players and Bank of America associates will be working on two other service projects in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. All the projects are each designed to help local children stay healthy and active as part of NFL PLAY 60, the league’s campaign to fight childhood obesity. Bank of America also will donate $100,000 to PLAY 60 non-profit community partners as part of the program.

You can learn more information about the Blitz here and we'll be live-tweeting the event throughout the day. Then you can see all the great players who helped build the playground in action when the Pro Bowl is played on Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN!

UPDATE: Photos from the build are now available on the NFL website.

Obesity-fighting mayor featured at SOTU

Mayor Mick CornettOklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, who put his city on a diet to combat childhood and adult obesity, will be sitting with First Lady Michelle Obama in her box at the State of the Union address tonight.

At the U.S. Conference of Mayors' winter meeting last week, Mrs. Obama discussed the importance of cities getting involved in combating childhood obesity, with, among other things, an emphasis on play. She praised Mayor Cornett specifically for the website he launched - thiscityisgoingonadiet.com - where people can learn how to lose weight and track their weight loss.

"That's what Mayor Cornett did, when he started talking about the problem of obesity and lost 40 pounds himself to get down to his target weight," she said. "And the people of his city took notice. When he goes to restaurants now, everyone watches what he orders. And a reporter quoted one of his constituents saying, 'When the mayor pushes you to lose weight, that says something.'"

Mayor Cornett's inclusion at the State of the Union tonight demonstrates the importance of sharing city-wide best practices in combating obesity. If you want your city to get involved in combating obesity by putting greater emphasis on play and outdoor activities, consider getting your city to become a Playful City USA and check our Play Matters report for success stories from cities who made play and the health of their communities a priority.

Project spotlight: Laura's Home

Jason, our stalwart online community coordinator, alerted me to this awesome new project. A Girl Scout troop in Cleveland is aiming to build a basketball court and play area at Laura's Home, a shelter for homeless women and children.

Here's how the group leader describes the project:

Laura's Home Women's Crisis Center serves women and children who are homeless or facing other crises. We are a bridge to the local church and community by providing safety, security and stability to some of the most vulnerable in our society. Last year, Laura’s Home provided 54,436 meals and 32,248 nights of shelter to 707 women and 434 children in crisis. We helped 138 women and 108 children as they worked through our 6 month long-term program. Won't you help us give them a place to play?

The troop is seeking to attain the Silver Award, the highest award available to girls age 11-14 in the Girl Scouts. How awesome is that?

The project has a budget of $30,000 and they've already raised $1,000. Learn more about the project and how you can get involved!

(Speaking of Girl Scouts, did you know your troop can earn patches for helping us map playspaces?)

YMCA releases resource kit encouraging play

YMCA's new "Healthy Family Home" resource kit is based around three key principles: play time every day, healthy eating, and family time.

What I love about the way this kit is written is that it not only includes some fun activity ideas, but it emphasizes that play isn't just for kids. Grownups and older siblings should participate, too.

"All family members should be effective role models by participating in all of the guidelines below," it says, and those guidelines include:

  • Moderate, fun, physical activity: try for at least a total of 60 minutes every day (which can be spread out in 10 to 15 minute intervals), and include outdoor activity whenever possible.
  • Vigorous, fun, physical activity three days a week: aim for 20 minutes total on these days and include outdoor activity whenever possible.
  • Bring adults and kids together in physical activities in order to provide opportunities for connecting and modeling positive behavior.
  • Limit screen time to less than two hours per day (television, video games, computer). Meals should not be consumed in front of a screen.

You can download the resource kit here (YMCA).

Playground-building Colts go to the Super Bowl!

Pierre GarconSunday was a great day to relax and watch some football, with teams battling for the chance to play in the Super Bowl on Feb. 7. A round of congrats are in order for the Indianapolis Colts, who will try and win their second Super Bowl in the last four years after beating the New York Jets in a come-from-behind 30-17 victory yesterday! The Colts are great champions for the cause of play, having partnered with KaBOOM! to build playgrounds in each of the last two years.

Thanks to the generosity of the Colts, National Starch and Lucas Oil, the students at Eliza Blaker School 55 in Indianapolis now have a great, wonderful place to play. On Sept. 29, 255 volunteers took time out of their schedules to build a brand new playground that serves the 300+ children who attend the school. Several Colts players, including Hank Baskett, Kyle Devan, Jamie Silva, Jordan Senn, and Pierre Garcon were on hand to help build the playground. In 2008, the Colts and National Starch partnered with KaBOOM! to give the children at Daniel Webster Family Academy a great place to play (video here).

Jordan SeenIt was almost an “all-KaBOOM!” Super Bowl matchup this year as the Minnesota Vikings, who have built four playgrounds with KaBOOM! and The Toro Company, lost in overtime to the New Orleans Saints 31-28.

More fun will come this week as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and several NFL players will join hundreds of volunteers for a playground build on Thursday in South Florida in conjunction with the NFL PLAY 60 Community Blitz. Taking place prior to the Pro Bowl (Sunday, Jan. 31), the NFL PLAY 60 Community Blitz is the largest community program in the league’s history. NFL PLAY 60 is designed to tackle childhood obesity through programming, grants and media time for public service announcements.

I think it goes without saying that no matter who your team is, NFL PLAY 60 is something we can all cheer for!
