Chavez Day Mural2a.jpgIn celebration of Cesar Chavez Day 2007, California First Lady Maria Shriver and CaliforniaVolunteers joined KaBOOM! to build 10 playspaces for more than 100,000 California children. Beginning on March 24, more than 2,500 volunteers constructed playgrounds and a skate park in 10 different communities across California. At all of these builds, Jamba Juice provided much appreciated smoothies to keep the thousands of volunteers refreshed, energized, and working.

CaliforniaVolunteers administers the Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning program, which includes the playground initiative, as well as the formation of after school service clubs for middle school students and curriculum development to integrate lessons regarding Chavez’s life into school day and after school activities. Franklin Elementary School's old playground equipment, built in 1970, no longer met safety standards. La Unión del Pueblo Entero (LUPE), Salinas
Build Day: Saturday, March 31, 2007
Founded in 1989 by Cesar E. Chavez, La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) is a nonprofit arm of the farm workers movement. Field offices like this one in Salinas provide social services for the low-income population so that they can overcome any immediate challenges. This location also offers afterschool programs for children, and the Build Day provided them with their first playground.

Leonard Flynn Elementary School, San Francisco
Build Day: Saturday, March 31, 2007
Located on Cesar Chavez Boulevard, Leonard R. Flynn Elementary School has been in existence since the 1920s and had only a small play structure that was not nearly sufficient to accommodate the huge student population at the school. The new playground is used for afterschool activities during the week, on weekends, and during community events.

MAAC Housing Project, San Diego
Build Day: Saturday, March 31, 2007
In 1965, MAAC Project opened its doors to serve San Diego's disadvantaged and runs several programs, including HeadStart/FirstStart. The old playground structure was more than 15 years old and its dilapidated parts made the structure hazardous for children to play on. MAAC removed the old playground equipment and expanded the current site, creating a safe space for children to play, and an area where families in the neighborhood can hold informal and special events.

Mayfair Head Start, San Jose
Build Day: Saturday, March 31, 2007
The Mayfair Head Start program provides services to low income families in a predominately Hispanic and Vietnamese neighborhood. The 10-year-old playground that was on the site was not designed for the young Head Start children, and they did not have access to a playground designed for their age group. The site is open to the public and serves all kids in the surrounding neighborhoods.
