Ok, so I had a thought today that it would be fun to start a thread where people can share their playground stories.  I think this would be something entertaining to read and hopefully people will keep adding to it and it'll just keep growing.  I'm with KaBOOM! and unfortunat....

Can anyone inform me what format they have used to submit letters to major corporations for dontations or contributions? I've spoke with a few local companies and were rather simple but I know for larger corporations it may need to be a tad different.

Thanks

Hey Wol,

We have a series of articles about how to fundraise and develop sponsers for you project at: http://kaboom.org/BuildAPlayspace/Fundraising/GuidetoBusinessBucks/tabid/198/Default.aspx.

Which comapines did you have in mind?  People here may have experience with the same companies you plan to approach and may have insight.

For major corporations, I think your best bet is to do some legwork by phone first...because what you will find is that a lot of larger organizations have an individual or a committee set aside to review donation request letters, but they may also have their own form to use, and so you'll want to speak to someone to request that.  Also, by speaking to someone in that department or on that committee, you'll find out whether or not they have exclusions for playgrounds.  Some of these places just don't see the value in it, and some are so lawsuit-sensitive they don't want to donate money to a playground, i.e. they worry that if someone was injured, somehow the liability might fall back on to them.  So I would definitely look online at these companies websites, and call and ask before you begin sending out your letters.

We are located in between Austin & San Antonio and I am considering contacting Dell in Austin (we have both the computer co. & now a Dell children's hospital) . Another company I am interested in is actually a Plastic company called Thermon in San Marcos,Texas.

Thanks for your input. I will make several phone calls and check the companies website. Do you think a letter or face to face contact would be better if they are local?

I would say a face to face meeting with a letter in hand would probably be your best option. That way, they get a chance to meet you, and hear what you have to say, and they also have something on paper to remember you by and pass on to those who may need to see the information before you are granted any support.
