Ideas for play and playgrounds from around the globe....
posted by jblumstock  on Nov 27 2008
I've found that no matter how breathtaking the scenery, no matter how fabulous the food, what children really enjoy about any vacation are the new playgrounds they get to play in.  This was certainly the case during a recent trip to Budapest.  Happily for us, the city takes playgrounds ve....

This is in San Francisco. There is a great group out there called the Neighborhood Parks Council that is really active in maintaining their parks and playspaces. This is a fun idea that you might be able to organized in your community. -- Amy

NPC "Love My Playground" Kick-Off Event: Saturday, April 28th.
In promotion of National Playground Safety Week 2007 and National TV Turnoff Week NPC and RPD are initiating a series of playground workdays to resolve maintenance issues at the 30 city playgrounds that received a low grade on NPC's 2006 Playground Report Card. Join the Friends of Balboa Playground, NPC and RPD for the kickoff "Love My Playground" event at Balboa Playground on Saturday, April 28 from 10 AM to 1 PM. Balboa Playground is located at San Jose Avenue and Sgt. John V. Young Lane (click here for a map). There will be snacks and fun family activities such as face painting, and arts and crafts!

So come give a little love to Balboa Playground by helping sift and replace sand and clean up playground litter, while celebrating the start of this citywide playground clean-up initiative! You will also have the opportunity to join your local playground group and sign up for a future workday.

This is a great idea.  Any news on how it went on the 28th?  Do you know if they coordinate their clean-ups with Earth Day celebrations?  I would like to know more.  Thanks.

The Fairfield Skate Park Committee organized and completed our "Build" for the new skate park in an established city park. It adds to the recreational activities to the park. Now more families are using the park for family entertainment- young one can use the play-ground equipment, older kids use the skate park, and parents relax in the shade or join their kids in the fun! A question that keeps coming up is how to maintain this new facility? Other municipalities have told us that adding a skate park has not added to their park maintenance budgets. Having an annual community event to celebrate playground safety and the city's parks sounds like a great idea to get families involved- using and inspecting the parks on a proactive basis versus individuals calling city hall to complain.
