Landscaping AROUND the Playground
Posted: 02 Sep 07 12:07 AM

Hi all,

I am a Tulane university professor working with  Craig Elementary in the Treme neighborhood, a school that got a KaBOOM playground last year.  My freshman students (who are in a seminar on public education in NOLA) are doing a service learning project at Craig this fall:  the school wants to beautify the landscape AROUND the playground.  We weill be putting in 3 -4 full-day Saturdays of work (18 students or so; I think we can get a lot done!). I've got a landscape architect who is going to volunteer his time to designing sustainable landscaping that we can put in place.  I have a modest budget for plants, mulch, fertilizer etc., but I am really worried about equipment and tools:  wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels et al are expensive and I hate to waste $ that could go to the plantings themselves on equipment I may have no further use for (and have no place to store).  Any advice would be much appreciated.  What have you all who have playgrounds done with your landscaping around it?

Thanks for your help.

Ana

We just completed a build a few weeks ago and we are having a landscaping day to add sereval gardens to our playareas soon. To help with tools and equipment your best asset is the parents at the school- speak to the PTO/PTA. Invite them to join you and/or send home a description of your project with a detailed list of tool/equipment request. Ensure you list drop off /pick up times and have them label items with their names for a safe return. For bigger items that the avg person may not have, seek out a landscapers to donate equipment- if they are ensure of lending their equipment out... ask them to join in for the day to help so they can run their equipment. We seeked out a local landscape company and got $500 for flowers/mulch/ect... and $200 to use for equipment rentals but we are asking parents to bring their own gardening tools to help us out. We are even asking for parents to see if any plants can be spilt from their yard and transplaned to the playspace to help save$. Another great ideas is to work with a local reporter to do an article on the project and list the items you need donated. Good Luck!

ANA, KaBOOM! has had great success working with Hands On New Orleans and borrowing tools from them. Also, groups like City Year have tools, and they might be able to loan them to you. Also, what about Tulane? I think that you all have a facilities dept that has things like wheelbarrows & shovels. I assume that they do most of their work during the week, so they might be more than willing to loan you their equipment. These tools might be closer than you think!
