Ideas for play and playgrounds from around the globe....
posted by jblumstock  on Nov 27 2008
I've found that no matter how breathtaking the scenery, no matter how fabulous the food, what children really enjoy about any vacation are the new playgrounds they get to play in.  This was certainly the case during a recent trip to Budapest.  Happily for us, the city takes playgrounds ve....

Help! Need ideas for Children's Activities
Posted: 07 Jul 08 10:41 AM

Can people give me ideas of good children's activities for all ages?  It is a long day to keep kids engaged and I would love to hear some success stories of what really worked.

Thanks

Hey Mara!

Here are some ideas I found using the new Forum search. Click here to see the search.

Or jump straight to a topic with these links:

Hula hoops, jump ropes, tug of war, hide and seek, hopscotch, hit the stick and other easy games amuse children for hours. We are doing our build in two weeks and have worked in an activity for the children that will take most of the day for them to do. We are installing a privacy fence to go around the existing basketball court. It's approximately 150' of fence. We have a local Team Depot artist who will prime the panels and draw the needed stencils on each. During the build, the children will be in a roped off area away from the construction, painting the fence panels. We figure that by the time the kids finish, the remaining park items should be in place leaving the actual fence panels as the final installations for the day.

You can see if someone will donate 6X6 tiles that the kids can put their hand prints on. Once sealed, you can created a border on a concrete wall, take a piece of plywood to create a commemorative wall, or something along that idea which will give the children their contribution to the park.

Hope that helps.

Nancy

Painting is always a great activity for the kids; if you are building picnic tables or even installing basic trash cans, the kids can paint those to liven up the area and add in some extra color.  I've also seen groups that will have the kids work on some sort of cultural activity (making a long dragon, making a pinata, etc.), and then incorporating the item that they made into the end of the day (doing a dragon dance, breaking open the pinata, etc.).  I also think it's a great idea to have the kids come up with some signs for the playground, such as no running, no littering, etc.  This makes them invested in the project and helps them take responsibility for their area.
