Ideas for play and playgrounds from around the globe....
posted by jblumstock  on Nov 27 2008
I've found that no matter how breathtaking the scenery, no matter how fabulous the food, what children really enjoy about any vacation are the new playgrounds they get to play in.  This was certainly the case during a recent trip to Budapest.  Happily for us, the city takes playgrounds ve....

How are you helping the cause of play?

Have you added playspaces to the KaBOOM! Playspace Finder? Talked to your city council or Parks and Rec department about the need for well-maintained, fun playspaces in your neighborhood? Started a petition? Built a playspace?

This is the place to toot your own horn, so to speak. Shout it from the hills! Tell us how you're helping the cause of play!

Looking for ideas on how to start? Check out the Playmaker tracks for lots of ideas and guides.

We are so excited about the beautiful park in our new Hope Crossing neighborhood in northeast Oklahoma City!  Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity is grateful to KaBOOM! for its help in developing a 2.2-acre park with playground and swings, baseball backstop, walking trails, workout stations, picnic tables, benches, and trees.  Brown Park at Hope Crossing is an outstanding play, rest, and recreation place for what will be some 217 families when Hope Crossing is completely built out. It will be maintained by the Hope Crossing Community Association.

There is a good deal of energy and focus in Oklahoma City on beautification of public spaces, revitalization of the City's core, and rehabilitation and creation of new affordable housing.  Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity is a large, very active Habitat for Humanity affilate - the 8th most productive in the nation - and there are a number of other active organizations focused on affordable housing in central Oklahoma.  COHFH believes it is important to remember and address the need for an active, healthy, sustainable environment both in and around the home as we continue to address the need for affordable housing.

For more information on Brown Park at Hope Crossing, please visit www.CentralOklahomaHabitat.org/HopeCrossing.htm.

We have replaced 4 playgrounds over the past 4 years.  Our largest is Safety Harbor City Park a "Boundless Playground" .   We were the first in our county to achieve this certification.  We have heard of several local cities not replacing playground equipment once it has neared the end of it's life.  Instead they are tearing them down and making a passive park.  Even with recent budget challenges we are keeping Play on the forefront of our minds.

We are having a playground ribbon cutting ceremony at our school on August 5th, immediately following the orientation/ice cream social. One donor, Sonic, has also provided ice cream for the event, and Home Depot is providing water and kid kits! We will be appearing on the news the day before to promote, the mayor has declared it "All Play the Byck Way Day!" a representative from our Congressman's office will be there, as will be one of our Senators and Metro Council Members! The newspaper is covering the event and we are just going to have FUN!
