Recent Mom Scared of Playground Supervision
Posted: 14 Jan 08 1:47 PM

Hello Everyone,

I am a mother of a 9 year old who is about to be 10 in a few months. Even as he gets older I am scared myself of letting him go anywhere by himself. I think he will probably be a teenager when I feel comfortable with letting him go by himself. The fact of the matter is, there are predators everywhere. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Wow. Ten years old. That's a tough age. My daughter is still much younger than that. If I was in your situation, I don't know what I would do either.

This thought is just from me, not KaBOOM! Is your neighborhood playground near you? If it's in a relatively small area, you might be able to do something to get to know your neighbors a bit better. If you've got others keeping an eye on you and yours, you might feel better about giving your son some more leeway. Maybe organize a neighborhood watch group that, among other things, keeps an eye on the kids in the neighborhood.

I'm sure you aren't alone in your concerns. I'm sure there are others in your neighborhood with the same concerns.

My son is 10 and I feel the same way. We know too much today and I would rather be safe than sorry. When we go to the playground I try to sit on a bench and let him play and I either bring a book or go with another mom and we chat. I want to be there but not intrusive as he plays.
