I had a great experience building a playground in CA with a wonderful group of girls.  One of there ideas during the planning process was to help develop a maintenance plan themselves so that they could be the ones responsible for their playground.  On of their greatest ideas was taking a trip to a local park to have a clean up day.  For them this was a great opportunity to to see what they did not want their playground to become and also to assist in bettering their greater community!
