PRICEVILLE — Priceville youngsters are in for a double treat the middle of March. The town is jump-starting Easter.
Priceville will dedicate its $98,000 revamped playground at Veterans Park on March 15 at 1 p.m., followed by the annual Easter egg hunt at 2 p.m. Easter isn’t until the following weekend.
“Since Easter is earlier this year anyway, we decided that having the events coincide would be better for everyone,” said Mayor Melvin Duran.
But the rainout date for the egg hunt is March 22, the day before Easter.
Duran said it might be difficult to postpone the playground dedication because state officials are invited.
“We wouldn’t want them driving from Montgomery and then not have the ceremonies,” he said.
“We’ll pray it’s good weather.”
The town received a federal matching grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Land and Water Conservation Fund.
The grant is limited to $50,000, which the town matched.
The park has all new equipment including swings, slides and a multiple play station that has a rock climbing apparatus. Workers installed a rubberized turf and a handicap-accessible play area.
Town Clerk Kelly Dean said volunteers will hide 4,000 plastic eggs for the egg hunt.
Each egg will contain candy, but 400 eggs will have candy and cash.
“We’ll have four age categories,” she said.
“Parents can assist children up to 2 years old. The other groups are 3 to 4, 5 to 7 and 8 to 10. In each group, there will be 100 eggs containing candy and $1 bills.”
