Most major cities may have a returned Peace Corps Volunteer group. Contact them. Some of them probably have playground experience, but mostly, they like to volunteer.

I've also noticed that "google-ing" the word volunteer and your city usually pulls up opportunities.  There's quite a bit of websites that post opporutunites across the country.

Another idea for finding volunteers is to post your event on a site such as Network for Good (http://www.networkforgood.org/volunteer/), VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org/), or 1-800-Volunteer (http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/1800Vol/OpenIndexAction.do). These can be a great resource for recruiting folks in your community!
