Ideas for play and playgrounds from around the globe....

I've found that no matter how breathtaking the scenery, no matter how fabulous the food, what children really enjoy about any vacation are the new playgrounds they get to play in.  This was certainly the case during a recent trip to Budapest.  Happily for us, the city takes playgrounds ve....

Lighting vs. No lighting of the Playground
Posted: 09 Nov 07 10:39 AM

Has your community discussed the benefits and concequences of adding lights to your park?  If so, what was the final decision and the community's reasoning for their decision?

The residents are divided on the issue of installing lights within the Park.  Some believe the Park is unsafe after dark and needs to be illuminated.  Others believe the addition of lights will encourage undesirable activities (drugs, drinking, vandelism).  Residents adjacent to the Park have two concerns.  They don't want the lights to shine in their windows and the noise from kids playing in the Park after dark.  Thank you in advance for your response.  Take care.

We are thinking of putting in either a sensor night light so it won't encourage use but help allow neighbors and the police that someone is on the playground at night. We already installed a camera so another options for us is a night vision camera. We spoke with a security company and they reommended the night vision camera vs the sensor light. We had some issues with teenagers hanging out  and minor vandelizism/misuse.

I don't think you want a light that would encourage people playing at night for noise with neighbors. We find the police offen have to come and tell people to leave. Many are kids unsupervised and a light for use would only encourage them to stay out later unsupervised. We applied for a grant with a our local light company to help with the exspense.
