Ok, so I had a thought today that it would be fun to start a thread where people can share their playground stories.  I think this would be something entertaining to read and hopefully people will keep adding to it and it'll just keep growing.  I'm with KaBOOM! and unfortunat....

Build Day
Posted: 03 Sep 07 9:20 AM Modified By cmad on 9/5/2007 7:39:42 PM)
I noticed on the Waiver example that Kaboom does not allow kids under 18 to be a part of a construction team. We were thinking of allowing 15 year olds.  Does anyone have any advice?

For our build day we are having the "teens" help with the childrens activitys that we have planned.  This way we are following the rules and they are still participating in build day.

Thanks for bringing up this question, it's one that we have lots of discussion about at KaBOOM!.  We want to be able to have kids involved in designing, planning for and ideally building their playground, so they feel a sense of ownership and want to take care of it, and learn as much from the process as possible.  What we currently do is define the "playground construction site" as the area where the safety surfacing and use zones of the playground extend to, and we don't allow anyone under the age of 18 inside those borders.  That keeps them away from the holes for the posts.  We also don't have them mixing the cement.  However, aside from that, if the youth are of working age and have adequate adult supervision, they can help with other off-site construction projects like assembling components before they're brought over to be attached, and side projects too, within reasonable safety limits.  We have youth activities going on for the kids who are under working age.  But coming up with a fun, safe project for kids between 14-18 or so is often a challenge.  In the past we've found it's great to put these kids in charge of bringing around water bottles for volunteers, taking charge of recycling on site, etc. so they feel like they are contributing but are still safe.  What do you think?

At our build at Lincoln, we had a volunteer who brought their children one I believe was 9 and the other 15. But we put them away from the construction crew and had them in the front of the school on landscaping duty. Our partners were Build-A-Bear and KaBOOM! You might want to think about having them in an area away from the construction sight where they can be safe but still helping at the same time. =o)
