Ideas for play and playgrounds from around the globe....
posted by jblumstock  on Nov 27 2008
I've found that no matter how breathtaking the scenery, no matter how fabulous the food, what children really enjoy about any vacation are the new playgrounds they get to play in.  This was certainly the case during a recent trip to Budapest.  Happily for us, the city takes playgrounds ve....

Volunteers Needed in Sioux City on September 15th!

From the Sioux City Journal:

Anyone interested in building a new riverfront playground may join members of the Junior League of Sioux City on Sept. 15 when they spend the day on the project.

"Registration will begin at 8 a.m.," Mary Green-Warnstadt, league committee member, said today. "We plan to have the playground built by 4 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be served."

The playground will be built in Chris Larsen Park near the picnic shelter between the Lewis & Clark Interpretative Center and the Sgt. Floyd Welcome Center & Museum.

"Chris Larsen Park is a true community park that attracts families from the tri-state region and provides the 'welcome mat' for visitors traveling through the area," Green-Warnstadt said.

The Junior League is using the KaBOOM! model to design and build the playground. KaBOOM!, founded nationally in 1995, uses an innovative community-build model to bring together businesses and residents to build almost 1,000 new playgrounds, skateparks, sports fields and ice rinks across North America.

"Sioux City was one of 50 communities across North America to receive funds, technical assistance and training scholarships for the playground and field refurbishment projects from the Home Depot and KaBOOM! partnership," Green-Warnstadt noted.

To volunteer, preregister by calling (712) 255-6619 or e-mailing jlsc@juniorleagueofsiouxcity.com.

You can also volunteer by visiting the playground's project page on the KABOOM! website at http://kaboom.org/Default.aspx?tabid=289&CurrentProjectID=2136.

Thanks for the plug, Jason!  This is a project two years in the making.

The response from this newspaper article has been great.
