posted by jblumstock  on Nov 27 2008
I've found that no matter how breathtaking the scenery, no matter how fabulous the food, what children really enjoy about any vacation are the new playgrounds they get to play in.  This was certainly the case during a recent trip to Budapest.  Happily for us, the city takes playgrounds ve....

TAX DEDUCTION QUESTION
Posted: 09 Aug 07 2:33 PM
WE HAD SOME VOLUNTEERS FOR OUR BUILD THAT WORKED ON PREPPING THE SITE FOR A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE BUILD AND THEN ON BUILD DAY.  WE ALSO HAD SEVERAL BUINESSES DONATE SUPPLIES/EQUIPMENT FOR BUILD DAY.  ONE VOLUNTEER, A TEACHER AT OUR SCHOOL, DID LANDSCAPING FOR HIS PARENTS' BUSINESS BEFORE HE BEGAN TEACHING.  HE HELPED US OUT FOR A FEW DAYS, PREPPING THE SITE, ARE WE ABLE TO GIVE HIM DOCUMENTATION BY LETTER FOR HIS TAXES?  WE ARE ALREADY IN THE PROCESS OF WRITING LETTERS FOR THE BUSINESSES BUT WE WEREN'T SURE HOW TO HANDLE A VOLUNTEER THAT DONATES SO MUCH TIME AND EQUIPMENT.  IS HE ELIGIBLE FOR A TAX DEDUCTION OR WOULD LANDSCAPING NEED TO BE  HIS CURRENT OCCUPATION?

You could call the IRS and ask them but I would think that no, he would not be eligible for a tax deduction because his current occupation is "teacher" and he wasn't missing time from his regular job since this is the summer break for schools.  If he bought any materials to do the site prep, then you could write the letter acknowledging the expense that he put into those materials because those items would be essentially like a donation.  But maybe someone here will have done this before and can give you a response before you have to go through the IRS--I've talked to them before--they're nice, believe it or not, but the whole phone menu is a nightmare... took me at least 20 minutes and several different phone numbers before I got to anyone who knew the answer to my question.
